Darkfield is at the cutting edge of contemporary theatre making in the UK today, so it was a real privilege to host them at Goldsmiths. What initially drew us to the company was the performances they share in complete darkness, which was relevant to a devised theatre module on offer to our second-year undergraduate students. However, as we talked more with David and Glen, it turned out that there was just heaps more to play and experiment with that ended up benefitting our final year students too - not least working with binaural sound recording. They didn’t just offer a ready-made workshop so much as a model for experimenting with space, sound and technology that accommodated and responded to the students’ own creative interests. Feedback was also glowing! David and Glen are highly personable, and we’re now planning on making these workshops a more regular feature of our provision.

PRESENTATION OR TALK
1.5 - 2 hours

An outline of DARKFIELD’s work, covering key practices and processes, industry advice and a Q&A.

WORKSHOPS
1 - 3 days long

An in depth exploration of specific DARKFIELD key practices and processes, with a mini project assignment completed over the course of the workshop. This could be a day long, or three days long.

The length of the workshop determines what subject matters can be covered and to what depth. This option includes the use and demonstration of DARKFIELD’s specialist recording equipment.

RESIDENCIES
3 weeks up to an entire term

An extended period of time to undertake a project embedded within the course module -  this could be from three weeks up to an entire term. This allows for a performance idea to be explored and created in depth. This could also work in conjunction with bringing an existing DARKFIELD show to site, for students and audiences to experience with potentially some additional work experience opportunities.

Students will be mentored throughout by the team, offered advice and feedback on all elements including scriptwriting, directing and sound production. Students will have access to recording time with the binaural head, which is the tool DARKFIELD employ for their show recordings.

At the culmination of the course students will have an opportunity to showcase their work before an invited audience.
